4 Good Reasons to Have a Roofing Contractor Roof Your Home in the Winter

September 18th, 2009
<

If you live in an area of the country, such as Massachusetts, with harsh winters you might be wondering why anyone would consider roof replacement in the winter time. Well, it’s not as uncommon as you might think. Many roofing contractors offer their services year round even in cold and snowy regions?like Massachusetts, which is where I’m from. Roofing Massachusetts homes during the winter is no different for a roofing contractor than doing it any other time of the year, with a few exception, and some roofing contractors and there crews even say that they prefer it. First let’s go over what makes roofing more difficult this time of year and the arguments against having a new roof installed right now. It’s too cold outside for a roof replacement. This argument just doesn’t hold any water. It may be cold out now but who cares? Your roof doesn’t care. The crew installing your roof doesn’t care. Don’t worry about the guys doing the installation. If the cold weather bothered them that much they wouldn’t be up there installing your new roof in the first place, they would be working an indoor job. I know a lot of guys that prefer roofing in cold weather just because it is cold. Try roofing a black roof in the middle of the Summer. Lots of fun, let me tell ya. In the Summer if it is 90 degrees on the ground it feels like 110 degrees up on that roof (and sometimes is). There is too much snow on my roof to have it replaced right now. This, my friend, is why God created snow shovels. It is really not a big deal to shovel the snow off of a roof. It usually takes a half-hour to an hour to remove the snow and most roofing contractors don’t even charge you extra for this as long as they are there to replace the roof and not just shovel snow (a service which many roofing companies provide in the North East). Does the crew need to be careful while doing this to avoid falling? Of course. However, the crew needs to be careful in every regard when it comes to roofing a house, this is nothing new. These guys are professionals and safety should always comes first, and does always come first with a responsible roofing company. Alright, I just gave you 2 reasons why many people think roofing shouldn’t be done in the winter and why they aren’t really very good reasons at all. Now let me give you the 4 best reasons you should consider having your roof replaced this time of year. 1. ) Ice dams causing leaks. The winter time in Massachusetts tests your home and roof in ways unlike any other time of year. The most common cause of roof leaks during the winter is the dreaded ice dam. An ice dam is formed over the eaves of a house from built up snow melting and running down the roof only to refreeze at the very edge of the roof line. Here in Massachusetts, as well as other cold climate areas, roofing contractors use a product called “ice & water barrier” together with proper drip-edge flashing techniques to prevent ice dams from damaging your home and causing leaks. This technique, when done properly, provides added protection for at least 3 feet up from all edges of the roof. Many older roofs do not have “ice & water barrier” installed. If your roof is leaking because of ice dams this could be a great time to have the roof redone properly and insure that ice dams will not be bothering you and your home again. 2. ) Winter conditions, in general, make a bad roof worse. If you had a bad roof before winter hit it is only going to be in worse shape once spring arrives. There are many factors that adversely affect your roof in the cold weather. I already discussed ice dams but there’s more. During the winter as the temperature fluctuates it makes your shingles expand and contract causing curling and cracking in older shingles. Now let’s say some of your old roof shingles curl a bit, then you get a nice wet, heavy snow and the weight of the snow causes some of those curled shingles to crack. Now you have a potential new roof leak. Also, when that wet, heavy snow then freezes it will possibly cause even more damage to your old roof shingles. The thawing and refreezing that occurs throughout the winter time is nothing but bad for old shingles. Old roofs hate the cold winters. 3. ) Faster service on your new roof installation. It’s a simple fact that Massachusetts roofing contractors, and roofing contractors in general, are not as busy during the winter. What this means for a homeowner needing a new roof is that the roof contractor you choose might be able to install your new roofing in a matter of days from the time that you sign the contract as opposed to waiting weeks, or even months sometimes, if you hold off until the spring, summer, and fall months. For many homeowners this reason alone should be enough to have your roof done in the winter time. 4. ) Save money by taking advantage of a slow time of year for roofers. Who doesn’t want to save as much money as possible especially when it comes to an expensive home improvement project such as re-roofing. For the same reasons that you may be able to receive faster installation service on a new roof from a roofing contractor during the winter, you will also probably receive a better price than you would during the warmer months. Most professional roof installers will provide you with the same labor warranty for a roof installed in winter time as a roof installed any other time of year. The material warranty is provided by the shingle manufacturer and will be the same regardless of what season the roof was installed. Roofing contractors want to keep their crews busy and will give you a better price just to avoid having to lay off employees during the winter slowdown. So what are you waiting for? If you have a house with an older roof that needs replacing get in touch with a local roofing contractor and find out for yourself why roofing Massachusetts homes or a home in any other area is a perfectly viable option in the winter time and often a bargain!

Some Tips Before Buying Any Snow Blower

September 18th, 2009

Snow blower is a machine which is used to clear the unwanted snow from your lawn, driveways, sidewalks, roadways, runways etc. Nowadays snow blower is becoming very popular because of its features, but it?s not a simple task to choose a right snow blower for your lawn or house.

Really snow blowers or snow throwers serve a great purpose during the wintertime. Some people love snow and welcome its arrival, while others wince at the back pain they have to look forward to. It?s not surprising that these 2 people fall into 2 groups: those with snow blowers, and those who shovel. Here are some tips to help you enjoy the white stuff once again.

The snow remover is a tool that you may well want to consider investing in if you spend a lot of time and effort shoveling snow every year. It most certainly can limit the amount of strain you put on your back, with the potential to save you both pain and expensive medical bills.

There are various types of snow blowers available in the market. Mainly there are single stage and a two-stage machine snow blower machine. The gasoline powered drive and electric driven machines are available in the market. Gasoline engine driven machines are generally two stroke engines and are noisy and polluting. Electric driven machines have the disadvantage that their power is limited. They cannot be made as two-stage machine. Where the snowfall is heavy, the electric machines will not be useful as the gas machines.

Cost of these snow blower can be vary widely but on average you should expect to spend between $300 and $850 for a single stage blower, and over the $1000 mark for a two stage machine. Specifications like power and blowing distance will have an impact on the price tag.

There are many kinds available to buy, but before you pick the kind that is right for you, you may want to consider the following:

1)How snow you get will affect the type you choose, and you should answer the following questions: how many inches of snow do you really get, how many days of snowfall do you get every year, and does the snow tend to be on the lighter side or harder and more compact?

2) Try before you buy: it may be possible to try the machine at the dealership. It?s always worth road-testing it before you part with your cash, if at all possible.

3) Consider the amount of snow and the density of snow that you will have to deal with. Take into account the total number of days of snow and the inches of snow per day. Also consider if the snow is fluffy or hard when you have to deal with the snow.

4) Take your machine for a test drive. Some showrooms have arrangements for testing the snow blower in their back yard. Going for a demonstration gives you the feel of the machine.

There’s a Sport for Everyone,traditional Individual Sports

September 18th, 2009

There’s a Sport for Everyone
Sports offer a multitude of benefits to people of all ages and all walks of life. Playing sports not only improves cardiovascular health and prevents weight gain, but also helps people make friends, develop a sense of competition, and reduce stress. Most health experts recommend at least 30 or 60 minutes of physical activity each day, but few of us actually meet that target.
If you fall into this group, perhaps it’s time to liven up your routine and find a new sport (or several) that you’ll enjoy participating in regularly. No matter what part of the country you live in, or the type of climate, there’s a sport that can be played there. Find the perfect mix of indoor and outdoor sports to keep you in good physical health all year long. Most people associate the word “sports” with traditional, competitive team sports that they may have played in high school. These can include football, soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, hockey, cricket, and tennis. But the fact that you’ve graduated from high school doesn’t mean that you can’t continue to play these traditional favorites. Sign up for your workplace team, or look for an amateur league that meets on weekends. This can be a great way to expand your professional network, make new friends, and enjoy your time off. For more information our sit http://www. sports4allofus. com/

Traditional Individual Sports
For people who prefer to spend time alone or in small groups, or who can’t commit to the regular game schedule of a competitive team, individual sports are a good option. Speed walking, jogging, and running are traditional standbys, but they’re just the beginning. Road cycling and mountain biking, snowshoeing, skiing, and hiking are good ways to work out some tension while enjoying the great outdoors. Looking for a challenge? Try rock climbing. And if you live in an urban environment, roller skating, roller blading, ice skating, and skateboarding are good outdoor alternatives. If you enjoy the water, consider canoeing or kayaking on a nearby lake or river, or if you’re near the ocean give surfing a try. Of course, there’s always swimming, which is versatile for outdoor bodies of water or indoor pools. Once you have mastered the basics of swimming, consider signing up for a scuba diving class and then reward yourself with a vacation where you
If all the sports mentioned so far seem passé, you may want to look for an adrenaline rush with one of the many extreme sports that have recently been growing in popularity. They’re a little more expensive and require an investment in safety equipment, but they might be just what you’re looking for. If you don’t have a fear of heights, skydiving, plane jumping, hang gliding, and bungee jumping might fit the bill. If you like to take the action to the water, try kitesurfing, parasailing, whitewater rafting, or kayaking. Cave diving is another interesting option for exploring the depths. And, if you prefer extreme winter sports, check out snowboarding, ski jumping, and ice climbing. For more information our sit http://www. sports4allofus. com/

Tips to Find the Right Winter Boots

September 18th, 2009

The cold weather?s here again, and it?s time to forget summer sandals, and think boots- one of the top winter must haves. While you?re on your boot-shopping mission, every pair may seem desirable in its own way. But finding one that?s functional yet trendy is the challenge. Here are some tips to find the right boots to keep those tootsies toasty!Tip #1 – Go for over-the-knee or knee-high bootsWhile ankle boots and mid-calf boots are hot, they?re impractical for winter. Knee-high or over-the-knee boots can keep you warm and comfortable even in freezing weather. Pair them up with short skirts or tuck in your skin-tight jeans for a sexy and sensational look. Tip # 2 ? Leather boots are better-offSuede and sheepskin have no doubt been more popular. But they?re hardly appropriate for winter, especially if you live in areas experiencing heavy snowfall. Leather boots on the other hand look chic and can keep your feet warm if properly insulated. Take a look at the winter sale at Shoebuy for comfortable and trendy leather boots and avail free shipping deals!Tip # 3 – Opt for waterproofThis can help keep your feet dry even when you?re walking through the wettest bogs. You will find great waterproof shoes at Timberland, which have an insulated mid-sole and rubber heels that prevent water from getting through. Tip # 4 – Choose a neutral style and colorBefore you pick up your boots, make sure you can pair them up with most of your outfits. If not, you may end up buying more boots than you need. It?s probably a good idea to browse through the winter collection at an online shopping mall, and choose the kind of boots that would best serve your purpose. Tips # 5 ? Always ask yourself- ?heels or no heels?? Heels are certainly not a good idea for icy sidewalks. But high-heeled winter boots do turn the most heads during days when the weather does cooperate. However, if you?re looking for something more comfortable, winter fashion 2009 has brought in a whole new collection of hot and practical boots that are worth a look. Lace up or pull-on winter boots are the most popular, as they can offer good comfort as well as keep your feet warm. One common problem with winter boots is bad odor. To avoid this, remember to pick up boots with ‘Cita-XY Agion’ insoles. These insoles comprise of various fibers combined with ionized silver, which keep a check on bad odor. So, get ready to step out in style this winter!
